When dealing with the effects of hot weather and heatwaves, our emergency response tends to work well. However, the data tell us that the most severe impacts on human health tend to occur outside of alert periods, suggesting that to protect vulnerable people, the focus needs to shift to year-round engagement and behaviour change.

This event will bring together colleagues from public health, resilience, NHS acute trusts and primary care, adult social care, and the voluntary sector support community to consider how we currently manage heat and how we can enable people to be safe when the temperature rises.

The agenda will include discussion and interactive sessions about current practice in managing hot weather, how to improve messages to engage communities in weather resilience all year round, and lessons from research on how people understand heat risk. The NHS Sustainable Development Unit will also provide an update on the new NHS Long-Term Plan and its relevant commitments to improve sustainability and resilience in health and social care.
