Friday 13th December – An Exploration of Sculpture at the V&A

The V&A is the world’s leading museum of art and design, full of priceless textiles, paintings, sculpture, metalwork and architecture.

In this tour we will take a mini European Grand Tour, like 18th century aristocrats, around the great sculpture and architecture of Europe in the V&A’s unique Cast Courts. In the 19th century Victorian pioneers travelled around Europe taking plaster casts of everything from Michelangelo’s David to the huge Doorway from the West Front of Bologna Cathedral. We will learn about the casting process and the Renaissance originals they are taken from. The collection also includes the extraordinary electrotype of The Gates of Paradise from the Baptistery in Florence.

From plaster casts and electrotypes we will move to the British Sculpture galleries which trace the development of sculpture in Britain from 1500 to 1900. The V&A is THE national museum of sculpture and it includes work in every medium. We will discuss the different techniques used to sculpt in stone and bronze and the development of artistic styles over this 400 year period. Examples include funeral effigies, portrait busts and garden sculptures. The collection culminates in the fantastic Rodin bequest, a selection of sculptures chosen personally by the famous French sculptor and presented by him to the V&A

Meet: at 15:45 for a 4pm start (note the earlier than usual timing), inside the main entrance from Cromwell Rd (next to the info desk with the modern glass chandelier hanging above).

End: approx. 18:00 at the V&A

Post-tour drinks: in the V&A café bar (the Gamble, Morris and Poynter rooms), one of the highlights of the museum in its own right! This has a licence for wine and beer.

Numbers are limited to 20 people.  Registered members can invite one guest.

£12 for members

£12.50 for Guests
