Robotic surgeons? Self-driving cars? A shiny metal babysitter? No matter how advanced robots become there is still a stigma of mistrust attached to them when it comes to the things we care most about – our lives and our families.Thrishantha Nanayakkara believes the key to trust is reliable functionality backed by human-like reasoned decision making. In his talk he will explore the current challenges to this vision including an over-reliance in robot design on rigid, rule-based algorithms, and a need to make future robots more comfortable in their surroundings, able to evolve, react and interact with the constantly changing environment they find themselves in.
