Monday 17th June 2019 – Imagined Geographies

A Cambridge Society of London guided walk led by Lester Hillman (St Catharine's 1970), an accredited guide and academic adviser to a number of local organisations.

Meet 6.30pm Chancery Lane Tube Holborn

From Chancery Lane our walk helps celebrate 100 years of Geography at Cambridge. Led by Lester Hillman it starts near where the 'Geographers Shop' once was. It finishes near a church dedicated to the Patron of Travellers - St Botolph Aldersgate. Along the way we will explore 13th Century Superfast Broadband, Shakespeare, Agincourt Peace Negotiations, Disraeli, Dickens, Oliver Twist, Mary Shelley's 'Frankensteinia' and a lot more. Alan Turing will feature briefly.

2019 is the 150th anniversary of the Holborn Viaduct and we will sweep over the Fleet Valley (where it meets the mighty 'Amazon'!) There will be views to the future Museum of London site and to the Crossrail hub at Farringdon, a new centre of gravity for the city.

Finish, after about 90 minutes, will be in the vicinity of Blackfriars Bridge, which opened on the same day as Holborn Viaduct in 1869.

Numbers are limited to 20 people.  Registered members can invite one guest.
