An introduction to key legal principles, law in practice and successful navigation of the legal system to access justice.

This course introduces key legal principles and procedures of English law, as well as international law and procedure. It examines how the justice system works in practice, including in the context of contemporary realities of the legal system: unaffordability and inaccessibility of justice; and growing number of people self-representing in court disputes.

You will learn about law, lawyers and the legal system in practice, including key principles of contracts and liability; legal reasoning; and training of lawyers in England and Wales and the US, and how this affects justice. You will also learn how to successfully navigate the legal system, communicate with lawyers, and interact with all representatives of the justice system. The course is interactive and provides students with opportunity to practice new skills.

The major elements of the course are:

Part 1 The Law and application in practice

-         Key legal principles of English law

-         Understanding contracts

-         English legal system in practice, and comparison with the US and other legal systems

-         Training of lawyers (barristers, solicitors and US attorneys) and how this has affected development of the law, as well as client representation

-         Access to the legal profession, and how this affects client representation and justice in general.

Part 2 Navigating the Legal System to obtain justice

-         Understanding legal reasoning of judges and lawyers

-         Reducing legal costs

-         Dealing with ‘legalese’ (lawyers’ jargon) - in contracts and in court

-         Understanding Court /litigation processes

-         Tips for successful communication with lawyers, judges and other stakeholders of the legal system
