"French Politics: A Neighbour's 'History of the Present'" is a monthly seminar series organised by the University of Westminster (Centre for the Study of Democracy & Institute for Modern and Contemporary Culture), introducing the "crème de la crème" of the French research in social sciences and humanities.

This series is designed with the Foucauldian notion of “history of the present” in mind and will tackle some of the most pressing challenges of French politics and political theory today.

Introduced by Eric Fassin (26 September 2019, Fyvie Hall), whose paper is titled " Intersectional France: Sexual democracy, racial democracy, and liberal democracy", this seminar series will develop into three cycles:

1. An Authoritarian Spiral in France?

- Sophie Wahnich (10 October 2019, Room UG05) "Democracy Taken in Vice: Understanding the 'Yellow Vests' Event"

- Ninon Grangé (14 November 2019, Room UG05), "The State and the Exception: Existence, Fiction, and Reality"

- Fabien Jobard (Wed. 4 December 2019, 6pm, Main Boardroom), "Liberal, Authoritarian, or Police State? Defining the French State According to its Police"

2. French Universalism vs. Alien Identities?

- Silyane Larcher (30 January 2020, Fyvie Hall), "On the Cunning of National Reason: French Postcolonial Dispute over Race, Gender and Equality"

- Sébastien Chauvin (13 February 2020, Fyvie Hall), "How gays almost became French: Republican homophobia, queer banalisation, and the limits of sexual nationalism"
