The UK  in the world today

This evening is being Hosted by PA Consulting, a consultancy specialising in management consulting, technology and innovation. It has clients in both the private and public sector including local and national Governments and the defence sector.

What's happening in the world today?

Young people are looking to understand the UK’s place in the world today. Our speakers will explore and explain current global trends from a political/Human Rights and economical perspective.

The United Kingdom is currently a global player. It is a permanent member of the UN Security Council, the sixth largest economy in the world. Our diplomatic, intelligence, aid and military capabilities ensure that we remain a military power, a nuclear weapons state, a member of the world’s most powerful intelligence agreement and a cultural superpower. We are also pre-eminent as a financial centre, with relations with Britain’s principal ally, the US still intact.

Our speakers today will explain  and explore current global trends and how they are impacting on the UK today. They will also explain what it takes to be a university academic and an entrepreneur in Britain today.

Come prepared to listen to and participate in discussions , a Q and A session and networking.

Our speakers are:

Dr Stephen Hopgood, a Professor of International Relations and Pro-Director (International) at SOAS.

His main area of interest is the international politics of humanitarianism and human rights, including the sociology of human rights advocacy. From 2009-2012, he held a Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship which culminated in the book, The Endtimes of Human Rights (Ithaca, NY: Cornell University Press, 2013) named by the Guardian as one of the top ten books on international struggle. This follows on from his ethnography of Amnesty International, Keepers of the Flame: Understanding Amnesty International (Ithaca, NY: Cornell University Press, 2006), which won the American Political Science Association Best Book in Human Rights Award in 2007. He has a D Phil in International Relations from the University of Oxford where he was a student at Nuffield College.
