About this Event

What is the Weekly Autumn Intensive Course?

The Weekly Autumn Intensive Course is an 16-week intensive tuition program that runs throughout the autumn term - from September until December. It has been developed for students preparing for entrance exams for private schools and grammar schools in London and the surrounding counties. It is available for those getting their children ready for 7 plus, 8 plus, 10 plus and 11 plus exams. During the 16 weeks, students tackle a wide range of topics in maths, English and reasoning - all of which are likely to be assessed in private school entrance exams. The course is especially geared towards students set to take the exam at the end of the autumn term, helping them by providing a comprehensive and complete course of tuition and revision, just before the exams take place. It is also particularly useful for those taking pre-tests before the main examination.

How is the course structured?

Classes take place every Saturday and last 150 minutes. The children take part in maths, English and reasoning instruction, with the aim of gaining new knowledge, filling gaps, and increasing proficiency in all subjects and areas. Each week we teach different topics from the 11 plus test, according to our structured program and the 11 plus syllabus. Students are instructed in techniques to show them how to answer questions in the correct way, giving them the means to handle any new type of problem as they progress. Homework also forms a linchpin of the course, with students completing weekly tasks, based on the instruction from each class session. Practice truly makes perfect and so there is a large emphasis on this part of the program.

Additionally, there is regular exam practice and interview experience to complete the checklist of essential aspects required to face the examinations. We carry out ongoing assessment throughout the term-long course, in order to let you know how likely it is for your child to pass and under which circumstances success that will be most likely. We may suggest supplemental instruction via one-to-one classes if deemed necessary, and operate a strict policy whereby we only continue tuition for children who are suitable in terms of ability, potential and personality. We provide feedback on all these issues and will be in a position to comment on this after the first 3-4 weeks of instruction.

In the event of staying quarantined or subjected to restricted movement:

All of our courses are available in live online classes and so we are in the position to invite your child to be taught in our online lessons, with all necessary print materials provided by post in advance. Classes are given in small groups of 2 to 3 students, ensuring a dynamic environment for children to learn and also allowing for each child to receive enough attention. We will be using an online interactive whiteboard called Idroo alongside online video calling via Google Meet, Zoom, or another secure and reliable alternative.

This tried and tested method is very easy to use - we have been conducting online tuition for many years with students internationally and now have a track record of effective online tuition with children from ages 8 to 18 in many subjects.

As mentioned above, classwork and homework materials will be posted to each individual child for the entire course, so online instruction is supplemented by work packs during the lesson, plus additional materials for practice outside of teaching sessions. We also offer the opportunity to scan and return any work to us for review.

Bearing in mind that restrictions could last indefinitely, we will also be at hand to help you fulfil any other educational needs you may have, as time progresses, and schools remain closed.

Who is the Weekly Autumn Intensive Course for?

The Weekly Autumn Intensive Course is for children who will be completing their entrance exams in the same term, i.e. on an examination date set between the months of November and January (depending on the choice of school). The course is available to children studying for the 7 plus, 8 plus, 10 plus and 11 plus.

While the full spectrum of topics are covered for each year group, the course is markedly ideal for students who need to fine-tune skills, as well as those who need to improve exam technique or develop their creative writing skills.

When is our Weekly Autumn Intensive Course?

Dates: 5th September 2020 - 19th December 2020

Time: Every Saturday morning 10.15am - 12.45pm or Saturday afternoon 1pm - 3.30pm

Location: St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, London, SW3 2QT

As stated above, the course begins in September and continues throughout the autumn term. Although we advise to start at the beginning and attend all sessions, it is possible to join the course at a later stage. Again, the potential of each student is measured and honest feedback is given in terms of ability, potential and chances for success.

How much does it cost?

Our Weekly Autumn Intensive Course costs £220 per month for each child. The monthly fee must be paid at the beginning of the month (by the 4th), for the month. This fee includes class sessions, materials and homework. It also includes the cost of any mock exams (there will be a minimum of two mocks during the course timeline).

A deposit of £50 will need to be paid to secure your child’s space. The remaining amount will be due at the beginning of the course and a reminder will be sent to you via email a week before. Although we accept cash and cheque, for administration reasons we prefer payment to be made via transfer.

We offer a free assessment in Maths/English for all new students lasting 60-90 minutes. After the assessment some honest feedback and recommendations will be relayed, and you will be able to reflect on our recommendations before embarking in any of our classes/courses.
