Physical Comedy & Clown with Mick Holsbeke

Ever since we were able to stand, we were able to fall, and humans love to laugh at someone who stumbles, trips, bobbles, bumps into, gets hit by or struggles with problems that should be easily avoidable, or otherwise simple to solve. Following in the traditions of Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, and Red Skelton, internationally renowned clown, Mick Holsbeke, will guide students through an introduction to the foundations of Physical Comedy and Clowning, giving participants a broad range of experience in these complex art forms. Participants will learn how to execute classic one shot gags, and pratfalls safely, plus how to build endless combinations of slapstick short comings. Participants will also explore elements of presence, play, improv, timing, tension, rhythm, focus, emotional endurance, physical precision, character development, working with a partner, and status, in order to gently approach the elusive state of Clown.

Teacher Bio: Mick Holsbeke is a clown with a ravenous appetite for the ridiculous! His unique perspective on clowning, exuberant physical acting, and circus expertise were developed at the prestigious École Nationale de Cirque de Montréal, and later at the Hangar des Mines, with Michel Dallaire, in France. In addition to multiple prizes at the Festival Mondiale du Cirque de Demain in Paris, Mick has also performed with international companies such as the 7 Fingers, Palazzo Colombino, Circus Monti, Cyclope, Cirque Plume, and Ursus & Nadeschkin, bringing hilarity and comic innovation to hundreds of thousands of spectators around the world. In 2016 Mick was produced by three French national theaters, plus Blueline productions in his solo clown show “Moby Mick,” and in 2017 Mick was asked to learn Yann Frisch’s renowned magic act “Baltass” for the magic show Réveurs Définitifs. Mick most recently moved to Seattle, became the father of a beautiful baby boy, and is currently performing a comic duo trapeze act in Teatro Zinzanni’s “Hollywood & Vine.” Versatile, comic, and out of control, Mick works as a performer, coach, director and clown in projects around the world.
